The Whole World Is In His Hands
Read: Colossians 1:9-20
“In Him (Jesus Christ) all things hold together.” Colossians 1:17
We have all learned the nursery rhyme “Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall; Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t put Humpty Dumpty together again.” A mother had just repeated this rhyme to her four year old son. The boy thought for a moment, then, as if having suddenly come up with a solution, he said, with bright eyed confidence, “Jesus could have done it.” Yes, Jesus could have put Humpty Dumpty together again!
How true —in a much higher sense! Paul tells us that Jesus Christ not only put all things together in the beginning, but that he still holds them together. As the all-powerful Son, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, He is the unifying force that holds both the physical universe and all human history together.
In fact, throughout his epistles Paul presents Christ not only as our Savior and Redeemer, but also as our all-powerful Creator and Sustainer. He tells the Ephesians, for instance, that the Father has put Christ “above all principality and power…and dominion…and has put all things under His feet.” He does, indeed, “hold all things together.”
Most important for us, Jesus Christ holds our little lives together. In a world that seems to be flying apart, not only does He “hold the whole world in His hands,” but he holds also all of us. When things seem at their very worst, we can rest assured: He holds all the pieces and He knows where every piece belongs. With the hymn writer we can sing:
In Thee all fullness dwelleth, All grace and power divine;
The glory that excelleth, O Son of God is Thine.
We worship Thee, we bless Thee, To Thee, O Christ, we sing;
We praise Thee and confess Thee, Our gracious Lord and King!
