John Chapter Three, Verse 16
Read: John 3:14-17
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. St. John 3:16
There is an old legend that every time a sinner is converted, the angels of heaven enter his or her name in the margin of a large Bible, opposite the Bible passage which brought the individual to faith. It is only a legend, of course, but if it were true, how many millions of the redeemed of all ages would have their names inscribed opposite John 3:16!
Can we ever sufficiently thank God for the healing streams of comfort and hope which have come into our lives through the divine assurance of this jewel of the Scriptures? When trials beset us, when doubts assail us, when our faith would break beneath the burden of strain, how often has our problem, our difficulty, our doubt, our anxiety dissolved and disappeared before the warmth of this divine assurance, like snow beneath the April sun?
John 3:16 is God’s love note addressed to us all. It is the short but reassuring message that God tells us that, come what may, He is the eternal lover of our souls. So dearly did He love us that He gave the most precious Gift He had, His only Son, in order that we might not perish, but might live with Him in eternal bliss and glory.
In moments of doubt and despair, in moments of fear and anxiety, let’s let our minds find rest in this comforting assurance of our blessed Redeemer. On His promise we can surely stake our all! With the Christian poet we can say:
God so loved the world that He gave His only Son to save
That all who would in Him believe Should everlasting life receive.
Be of good cheer, for God’s own Son Forgives all wrongs that we have done,
And washed us from sins dread stain That we eternal life may gain. Amen.
