My garden has gone everywhere! And when I say everywhere, I mean EVERYWHERE! What started as two nice and tame 5×12 foot gardens has now become what seems like a 30 by 30 biomass of cucumbers, pumpkins, carrots, kale, broccoli, and tomatoes. And it just keeps growing… With all the rain that we have about every third day, the runners from the vines are taking it in all directions… And I don’t even know what to do. I mean, as a gardener, I planted these vegetables because I wanted them to produce. I also had no idea that they would produce so much… They have begun to take over the yard. Even as frequently as Jeff mows the lawn, these plants seem intent on pushing him back. What was once tame has become wild with abundance and seems intent on making the most of all I have given it in sun and soil. Wow! What plants who just keep growing and giving out of the grace they have been given!!! They will not be contained! – and maybe this is also God’s dream for us as God’s people! Are we to be a people so filled with God’s goodness that we go wild forgetting all notions of a tame, neat 5 x 12 foot bed? How great it would be to take all the grace that pours forth from heaven upon us, and all the glory of the S(u)n and with abandon begin to grow food ministries, and homeless shelters, and reading programs for the kids of Weeping Water, Syracuse and Elmwood? If we forget the “reasonable”, the “practical,” and the “normal”, what wild craziness will God’s Spirit do with us…? Does it look like a camp ground for transient people who otherwise would sleep in their cars? Or maybe it looks like ESL classes or help passing citizenship tests for those new to this nation? What would those vines look like for us that grow so strong that even a lawnmower has no chance of beating it back?
